Rick Santorum Suspends 2012 Campaign for President

Rick Santorum announced this afternoon that he is suspending his presidential campaign after a weekend of “prayer and thought”, clearing the way for Mitt Romney, who will now most certainly be the GOP nominee, going against President Obama in November.

The former Pennsylvania senator canceled two events earlier Tuesday while adding an afternoon event to announce his withdrawal.

Hogan Gidley, the campaign’s communications director, said the two morning events were canceled to allow Santorum and his wife, Karen, to “settle in at home” with 3-year-old daughter Isabella after her weekend hospitalization, reported CNN Tuesday.

A new poll Tuesday from Washington Post/ABC News showed 51% of Americans would choose Obama if the election were held now, compared to 44% for Romney.
