Texas Reports Largest Over-the-month Increase in Employment

Thirty-seven U.S. states recorded unemployment rate decreases for the month of December, 3 states posted rate increases and 10 states recorded no rate change, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday.

The state of Texas reported the largest over-the-month increase in employment adding 20,200 jobs, followed by Indiana adding 15,100 jobs and California adding 10,700.

The largest over-the-month decrease in employment occurred in New York which reported a decrease of 14,000, followed by Missouri (-11,800) and Washington (-11,600).

South Dakota experienced the largest over-the-month percentage increase in employment of 1.1 percent, followed by North Dakota at 0.9 percent. North Dakota’s unemployment – the lowest in the country currently stands at 3.3 percent. North Dakota is home to the Bakken formation, a new oil play that is creating work for thousands of Americans who are flocking to the state.

Meanwhile, Nevada, which has led the nation in unemployment since May 2010, continued to record the highest unemployment rate among the states, 12.6 percent in December, down from 13 percent in November.

The national jobless rate currently stands at 8.5 percent.
